INEC :Right to franchise in correctional centres.
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has made the move to allow the inmates exercise their voting power
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has made the move to allow the inmates exercise their voting power as we move forward in our democratic development.
This is also subject to the approval and passage by the national legislative house.
However,a critical look at the policy suggested that the INEC need to do more in practical sense beyond the passage of the policy by the national assembly.
On the parties campaigns ,parties must be given fair platform to assess the correctional facilities for campaigns and political sensitisation. This will require security beef up across our correctional centres for crowd and security management.
Also, jail break occurs easily and freely at our correctional centres without crowd ,talk not of when large crowding and gatherings are officially organised with music and noise . This can be used for escape window
Another angle that must be watched is possibility of bargains .The political climate seems corrupt that anything can happen . Trade off by the politicians and hardened criminals may become a birth out of the process .
Meanwhile ,changes is inevitable for a society to grow . Thus,it will be advisable that limit to number of people or crowd limit is strictly enforced.
Every party must submit the names and identities of their party nominees that will be carrying out such special task to INEC , police and correctional centres offices
Also ,such special voting exercise must not be put on the same day with the general election to enable INEC have better human ,material and strategic management..
All these and more need to be done as not to have drawback in our democratic and political development
