A glance from 1861 to date 




1861✓ Britain captured Lagos and annexed it  as a  crown colony in  with the Lagos Treaty of Cession.

1914 ✓Nigeria Northern and Southern protectorate were amalgamated by Sir Fredrick Lord Lugard 

 1st October, 1960 ✓ Declaration of independence for Nigeria by the British colonial master.

October 1st 1963 ✓ Nigeria became a republic 

1966 ✓ First coup d'etat in Nigeria 

1966✓ Major General Aguyi Ironsi came to power 

1967 ✓ A counter coup d'etat was carried out 

1967 ✓ Major General Gowon became the head of state 

1967 ✓ The civil war broke out : brothers against brothers. Blood stains on our hands 

1970✓ The civil war ended .No Victor ,no vanquish

1974 ✓ Nigeria changed to left hand drive 

1975✓ Major general Muritala Muhammed  became head of state in a bloodless coup d'etat 

1976✓ Major general Muritala was killed in a bloody coup. 

1976✓ Major General Olusegun Obasanjo resisted the coup ,being the second in command. He became the head of state .He conduct an election in 1979

1979,✓ Late President Sheu Shagari

1983 1985 ✓  Coup d'etat brought in Late Muhammad Buhari in as military head of states 

1985- 1983 ✓ A coup d'etat brought in Major General Ibrahim Babangida in as head of states 

1991 ✓ Lagos was the former capital city of Nigeria but the  federal capital was  moved to Abuja on December 12, 1991 by  General Ibrahim Babaginda after surviving a coup d'etat.

1993 ✓ Babangida annulled the general election with the assumed winner as Late MKO Abiola  .Babangida later step down and put in an interim government 

1993 ✓  Chief Ernest Shonekan was the head of interim National government.August 26, 1993 – November 17, 1993

1993 ✓ Major General Sanni Abacha pushed aside the interim government and became the head of states .He died in office in 1998 

1998✓  Major general Abdul Salam Abubakar became head of state and conduct election in 1999 .

1999 - 2003 & 2003- 2007 : President Olusegun Obasanjo was sworn

2007- 2010 ✓ Late President Musa Yar dua.He died in office and Vice President Goodluck Jonathan took over 

2010,2011 -2014  ✓  President Goodluck Jonathan 

2015- 2018 & 2019 - 2022 ✓ Late Muhammad Buhari 

2023 -2027 ✓ President Bola Ahmed Tinubu 

Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa with estimated population of over 200million 

The country covers an area of 923,769 square kilometres (356,669 sq mi).

The country borders Niger in the north, Chad in the northeast, Cameroon in the east, and Benin in the west.

Nigeria is a federal republic comprising 36 states and 774 local government 

The official language of Nigeria is English, while the national/major local  languages are Yoruba, Igbo, and Hausa.

Nigeria has over 500 different regional and ethnic languages.

Nigeria’s three largest ethnic groups are the Hausa-Fulani, Yoruba, and Igbo.

The Nigerian currency is called the Naira.

Nigeria is rich in mineral endowments such as  crude oil,gold  ,limestone , Lithium ,coal ,tin  etc 

The Niger Delta region of Nigeria is known for its oil reserves that makes Nigeria a member of OPEC 

Nigeria is rich in cultural festivals, including the Argungu Fishing Festival, Egungun Festival, and the Durbar Festival.Osun Osogbo ,Ojude oba ,new yam festival etc 

Nigeria has several UNESCO World Heritage and tourist Sites, including the Sukur Cultural Landscape, Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove, and Aso Rock, Olumo rock ,Yankari game reserve etc
